Rafe Mair Celebrity Roast - Catherine Barr

HE's the voice of reason and the voice of rage. A curmudgeon with class, if you will. But underneath it all he is a father, a husband, a politician and one of the most popular radio hosts of all time. Fifteen years ago, Rafe Mair traded in his life as a lawyer and MLA and turned his talents towards talk-radio. Now, as host of CKNW's morning show, he brings in the ratings and the listeners in droves. Politicians fear him and audiences love him. Last Thursday, at Vancouver's new Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel, it was payback time. "Roasting Rafe Mair - Well Done" was the theme and the gloves were off. Not to worry though, all the low-blows were delivered with love.

CKNW talk-show host and BCTV news anchor Bill Good, seen here with wife Georgy, wanted to start the roast by "lighting the first match." He wheeled in a cartload of notes as a joke.

Good ol' Rafe was even roasted via video tape. Preston Manning said he was thankful Rafe was only on-air for 3 hours a day while Joe Clark called him "an equal opportunity destroyer."

A tender moment with wife Wendy beforehand helped prepare Rafe for what was to come. Rafe and Wendy both live in North Van.

Deputy Premier and Labour Minister Joy MacPhail was just as surprised as the rest when Premier Ujjal Dosanjh showed up unexpectedly to pay his respects.

Attorney General Andrew Petter presented Rafe with a revised millennium t-shirt saying he was finally giving in to Rafe's ravings about the new millennium not starting until 2001.

Reform party leader Bill Vanderzalm, seen here with wife Lillian, led the crowd in a rousing song of "On Top of Spaghetti", sung with some customized "Rafe" lyrics.

BCTV's provincial affairs reporter Keith Baldrey (left) and CKNW talk-show host Jon McComb shared some laughs in the lobby.

"The best part about Rafe is that he's already left the office by the time I get there," said fellow CKNW talk-show host Philip Till

Emcee, and news writer, Michael Smyth (left) did a great Don Cherry imitation. He and Supreme Court Justice Wally Oppal stole the show with their jokes and jabs.
