Gleneagles Golf 75th

GLENEAGLES golf course in West Vancouver celebrated their 75th anniversary on July 29th with a special golf tournament and luncheon. The course, which is a bit of an institution among locals, is the only public golf course in West Vancouver, but it didn't start out that way. In fact, the golf course was purchased by the district in 1958 for about the same amount of money as it now costs to buy a two-bedroom apartment. It's gone through a few changes, the latest being the addition of the new western rec centre, but something tells me that this precious nine-holer will be around for many years to come.

Dr. Saul Gelfand (left), Jack Bell and Sam Rosen were original course members in 1927. The land was then sold to the district in 1958 for an estimated sum of $350,000.

They're just a bunch of pros. Myles Heyworth (left) Mel White and Trygg Wenn are all Gleneagles golf pros serving in 1953, 1954-56 and 1990-present, respectively.

Not only is he one of the rec centre's "fit fellas", but exercise guru Barrie Chapman was happy to act as one of the afternoon's MC.

Cutting the anniversary cake after lunch was Katherine Power, one of the oldest playing former ladies captains.

Members of the B.C. Golf Museum were happy to attend. Executive director Dorothy Brown (left), volunteer Michael Riste and student Nicole Utterback brought along lots of memorabilia.

Golf course manager Jim McConnan (left) has a great team to work with, so be sure to thank him, C.J. Petton and Kim Verster next time you see them on the fairways.

You can always count on great food for any occasion at Gleneagles thanks in part to chef Tim Ma (left) and banquet manager Terry Nickolapolous.
