Gemini Nominations

Oct 26, 2002

by Catherine Barr

THE 17th Annual Gemini Awards, which honour the best in Canadian cinema and television, are being handed out in Toronto on Nov. 2, 3, and 4 by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. They can best be described as this country's Emmy awards so, as they say, it is a big deal just to be nominated. This year, those of us out west have a lot to be excited about because a record breaking 199 "westerners" were given the nod of approval and are now waiting for the words . . . "the envelope please". On Sat Oct 26, the Gemini Nominee Reception was held at the Westin Bayshore and a lot of familiar faces from the Shore were there to be recognized before flying out east for the big night.

Global National executive producer George Browne (a long-time North Shore resident), said the paint wasn't even dry in the newsroom when the 9/11 disaster hit. "We stayed on the air for 36 hours," he said, which earned him a Gemini nod for best news special event coverage.

With too many credit to his name to mention, Walter Daroshin, seen here with wife Tina Thorndycraft, is an industry mogul who happily calls the North Shore home.
