Celebration of the First People at Ferry Bldg.

Jul 10, 2004

By Catherine Barr

The "Celebration of the First People" exhibit at the Ferry Buidling Gallery in West Van marks two very important events. Created by guest curator and artist Xwa Lack Tun (Rick Harry), the exhibit showcases 20 Native artists and features Salish, Kwakiutl and Haida art. Running from July 10-28, the exhibit also marks the 15th anniversary of the Ferry Building Gallery. Opening night celebrations took place on July 10 complete with Native drums, canoes and barbecued salmon, all of which drew a large crowd and even a few television cameras. Congratulations to all.

Vancouver's best events and celebrity functions are all archived here. Vancouver pubs, clubs, nightclubs, gala events and fundraisers are included. Thanks for viewing.

Due to server capacity, you will not be able to access or click through to the larger photographs. With over 250,000 unique visits each month, our site would quickly exceed the amount of memory needed.

If you would like to receive a copy of a photograph, then please send an email and enclose the details of the event, the date, the name, the photo number and the names of the people in the photograph. Also, for security reasons, I prefer not to email copies of pictures to anyone other than the people who are actually in the photo. Thanks.

Adria Karchut is just one of the many hard working people helping behind the scenes. This night she was busy greeting guests and organizing art.

Ask Rick Harry (Xwa Lack Tun) the meaning behind his ancestral name and you'll get a big handsome smile. "I usually say it means good looking," he said as he posed for pictures with Ferry Building Gallery visual arts coordinator Ruth Payne.

Artist Wade Baker (Mintle-e-da-us) and glass artist Sol Maya are two of this country's most recognized artists. Standing in front of his newly carved totem, Wade is also the Millennium Coin designer of the Double Wolf August 2000 quarter.
